The Cariboo - Chilcotin Region
No matter what level of service is required, a cross-section of outfitters in the Cariboo Chilcotin Region is available to match and suit the situation. This region accommodates the largest number of guide outfitters of any area in the province of British Columbia. Service and facilities range from full-service, four-season lodges with all the amenities and geared to international clientele to "you do" camps catering to hunters who desire a more "wilderness experience".
The Cariboo Chilcotin Region is located approximately 150 air miles north of Vancouver and encompasses the municipalities of Williams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House. Located within this region's boundaries are three of British Columbia's pre-eminent parks: Bowron Lake, Wells Gray and Tweedsmuir Park. The biogeoclimatic zones range from the heavily ridged, irregular Coast mountains, to the Chilcotin Plateau consisting of dry, pine forested areas spotted with spruce swamps and wild meadow.
Two major rivers cleave this land: the clean and blue Chilcotin River and the muddy Fraser River. On the eastern border of this region the wetter climate of the Cariboo mountains contributes to the countless internationally acknowledged lakes and river systems that flow through this land. Here the fishing for rainbow and Kamloops trout is excellent.
The west side of the Coast Range also shelters a grizzly bear population that is second to none. The opportunities to find black bear and mountain goat are also excellent. The dry side of the Coast Range delivers grizzly, black bear, moose, caribou, bighorn sheep, cougar, and wolves. Mule deer and mountain goat are also plentiful here.
The Chilcotin Plateau is known for its excellent moose hunting opportunities, and some outfitters guide for outstanding mule deer found in good numbers along certain areas of the rivers. Cougar, wolves and black bear are also found in good numbers on the plateau, while the area also offers choice grizzly and caribou opportunities.
Whatever the needs of the outdoor adventurer, the guide outfitters of this region can provide it. Many of the outfitters also conduct summer pack trips, fishing trips, and wildlife viewing safaris.
